Are Food Prices Going Up?
Any price increases because of the drought would probably be seen in 2013 or beyond; most of the corn and soybeans grown in the U.S. is used as feed for chickens, hogs and cattle. So the real impact will be seen after the fall harvest when shortages of those grains could drive up feed prices. Predicted price increases range from 2.5% for pork to 3% for eggs to 4 or 5% for beef. Learn more about the drought and food prices.

Swine Flu... H1N1... H3n2...
What Do We Call It?

You hear the words swine flu, but you know that you’re more likely to get the flu from your co-work than you ever would a pig… so is the phrase swine flu really the right one to use?

Influenza or “flu” occasionally can be transmitted from people to pigs and pigs to people. In order to keep you and your animals healthy and protect pig farms across the country, here are some recommendations to follow:

  • If anyone in your family has flu-like symptoms, please do not attend fairs for 7 days after symptoms begin or until you have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications, whichever is longer.
While at the fair, take these simple precautions to protect yourself and others:
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner, especially after you cough or sneeze or have contact with animals.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If a tissue is not readily available, use your elbow joint to minimize hand contact.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

  • Do not eat or drink near animals or animal pens.
