Marketing Gimmick Alert

Stop Paying for Hormone-Free Chicken

“Don’t be fooled by this,” warns Urvashi Rangan, a senior scientist at Consumer Reports. A chicken claiming to be hormone-free “isn’t worth any more money than a poultry product that does not make this claim,” she says.

Why? USDA regulations have prohibited poultry growers from giving hormones and steroids to their birds since 1954, so all chicken is hormone-free. This label, while truthful, is also misleading. Herb Weisbaum, a contributor, put it best:

It’s like putting a “cholesterol-free” sticker on a banana — sounds good until you realize that all bananas are cholesterol-free.

Real, Cheap Food agrees that "it's not necessary to spend more."
